Abington Heights dominated its three matches last week with 5-0 victories to clinch the Lackawanna League boys tennis championship.

The Comets then went out Monday and added a 3-2 victory over West Scranton to complete a 14-0 regular season.

Abington Heights also secured the top seed for the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional team championships.

The Comets will host a Thursday’s quarterfinal match. North Pocono as the most likely opponent. Thursday’s winners advance to the semifinals and finals May 7 at Kirby Park.

Abington Heights defeated Riverside, Montrose and North Pocono April 22, 24 and 25.

Varun Iyangar and Sam Weis won at first and second singles in each match while Adam Vale-Jake Rosenstein won at first doubles.

The third singles and second doubles spots were unopposed in the Riverside match in which the Comets lost just two games in six sets.

Abington Heights won all three singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and lost just two games in doubles against Montrose.

No set went past 6-2 in any of the three matches on the week.

Chris Hobbie won twice at third singles while Charlie Puksta-Nadav Griver teamed for two second doubles wins.

Iyengar won in straight sets, then Vale-Rosenstein and Puksta-Griver swept doubles, also in straight sets, against West Scranton.

BASEBALL

Abington Heights knocked Valley View out of the Lackawanna League Division 1 lead April 22, then held first place with a 7-3 win at North Pocono two days later.

Scott Gilbert tossed a one-hitter with four walks and six strikeouts when the Comets beat visiting Valley View, 8-0.

Abington Heights broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, then added six runs in the sixth.

Jake Petty and John Deibert each had two hits and two RBI. Evan Dempsey had a double and two RBI.

Dempsey was the winning pitcher in relief against North Pocono when the Comets improved to 6-2 in the league.

James Myers had a three-run homer and Nick Notari had a double and two RBI.

Lackawanna Trail remained the unbeaten Lackawanna Division 4 leader with a 4-1 win at Elk Lake Thursday.

The Lions have allowed just two runs in their last three games and 13 runs in seven games this season.

SOFTBALL

Mara Hamm pitched her second and third straight three-hit shutouts as Abington Heights defeated Valley View and North Pocono, both by 8-0 scores, April 22 and 25 to improve to 10-0 and remain on top of Lackawanna League Division 1.

Hamm struck out nine with one walk against Valley View and fanned three without walking a batter at North Pocono.

BOYS LACROSSE

Abington Heights lost twice during the week in Wyoming Valley Conference matches.

The Comets fell in overtime at Lake-Lehman April 22, 10-9, then lost at home against unbeaten Crestwood, 22-2, April 24.

Nick Colombo and Jacob Naholnik scored against Crestwood.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Abington Heights moved above the .500 mark with an 11-1 win at Hazleton Area Thursday.

The Lady Comets are 5-4 in the WVC.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Defending champion Abington Heights handed former Lackawanna League leader Blue Ridge its first loss of the season Thursday with an 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 29-27, home-court victory.
