On Saturday, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health announced the country's first confirmed case of the strain of monkeypox.
According to the Swiss newspaper Blick, the patient recently returned from Africa.
Authorities have confirmed that the patient has been isolated, and there is currently no risk of transmission to people in close contact.
The infected person is carrying the “Clade Ib” variant, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has described as more contagious and more dangerous than previous monkeypox strains.
The virus has been spreading across multiple African countries for several months, prompting the WHO to declare a public health emergency of international concern in mid-August last year.
