Novak Djokovic snubbed Iga Świątek of a piece of history this week after scooping a cheque worth a record amount of prize money.

The Serbian earned himself a mouthwatering £4,004,226 after going undefeated in the ATP Finals, the highest amount won in tennis history.

Thanks to his stunning run in the tournament, Djokovic has finished the tennis season as the highest-earning player.

How much did Novak Djokovic win?

A record prize pot was on offer at the ATP Finals this year and Djokovic scooped the top bag after going 5-0 in his matches to clinch the title.

The handsome figure pocketed by the 35-year-old eclipsed the former record set by Ash Barty in 2019, who won £3.7m after winning the WTA Finals.

Despite Świątek's phenomenal run this year, Djokovic pipped her to the post in the 11th hour by taking home £49,887 more in prize money.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion won a total of £8.39m for his performances in 2022, with almost half of that amount coming from his triumph at the ATP Finals in Turin.

As well as his record-breaking winnings, the Serbian also equalled Roger Federer's record of six ATP Finals titles, and he became the tournament's oldest champion.

His prize money for this season is all the more remarkable given he was denied entry into the Australian Open and the US Open because of his vaccination status.

Despite the twists and turns in Djokovic's season, he still won six titles throughout the year, including his seventh at Wimbledon.

How much did Iga Świątek win?

The trailblazing Świątek had her eyes firmly set on becoming the first female player in two decades to earn the most in a single season.

Up until this week, she was very much on track to setting a new record.

The WTA world number one enjoyed the best season of her career throughout 2022, winning eight of the 17 tournaments she played in.

This featured six title wins on the bounce, including the elusive Sunshine Double, as well as a new record for the longest unbeaten run by a woman in the 21st century.

Świątek's remarkable 37-match winning streak bettered Venus Williams' previous record.

The Polish star also added two more Grand Slam titles to her tally after dominating in the French Open and the US Open.

Her success earned her a total of £8.34m, which included her taking home £2.2m from Flushing Meadows and £1.99m from Roland-Garros.

She looked sure to round off her season by winning the WTA Finals, but she was knocked out in the semis by Aryna Sabalenka.

The WTA Finals were only able to offer a prize pot of £4.2m this year, compared to the £11.8m on offer in 2019. Świątek aired her frustrations over the matter after finding out the ATP had announced a record prize money amount for its Finals.

"It’s just pretty sad the WTA kind of got hit by Covid and by not having the place to play before and organise everything properly. But on the other hand, you have an example in the ATP that they were able to do everything and even increase the prize money. So, hopefully for next time, we’re going to be kind of more prepared."
