The WTA Tour announced it is suspended until May 2 because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Due to the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak, the WTA tournaments in Stuttgart, Istanbul and Prague will not be held as scheduled,” the Tour announced. “We regret this is the case for all of our loyal fans, players, sponsors and all those who support women’s professional tennis.

“At this point in time, the WTA Tour is now suspended until May 2. We will make a decision in the week ahead regarding the remaining WTA European clay court events and will continue to monitor this situation closely and its impact on the 2020 WTA Tour season.”

The next Grand Slam tournament is the French Open set for May 24-June 7, followed by Wimbledon June 29-July 12.

"I would be hopeful that in that time... things would have gotten back to whatever the new norm is and the French Open would be able to happen," WTA CEO Steve Simon told the New York Times. "But I think it is going to be very tight and I know they have to be very nervous."

Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 9, also announced she plans to spend the next six weeks “in solitude.”

The ATP on March 12 also suspended play for six weeks.

Indian Wells on March 9 became the first major sporting event in the U.S. to cancel due to coronavirus.
