Bloomfield Hills edges Troy for Division 1 championship

Bloomfield Hills earned its second state title in the past three years, edging Troy for the Division 1 boys state championship Saturday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Bloomfield Hills, which finished second to Ann Arbor Huron in 2016, finished with 30 points, while Troy was second with 28 points and Huron third with 22.

Bloomfield Hills, which won the Division 1 state title in 2015, earned state titles at No. 3 singles (Constantin Hemmrich), No. 1 doubles (Cade Burman-Sebastian Burman) and No. 2 doubles (Vik Chakrabortty-Chaz Blamo).

Ann Arbor Pioneer gets fifth place behind doubles state title

Birmingham Brother Rice finished fourth with 21 points, and Ann Arbor took fifth with 19 points. Other finishers in Division 1 were Northville (17), Novi (15), Ann Arbor Skyline (11), Clarkston (9), Grosse Pointe South (8), Hudsonville (6), Rochester Adams (6), Troy Athens (6), Port Huron Northern (5), Traverse City Central (5), Grand Blanc (4), Holt (3), Rochester Hills Stoney Creek (3), Grandville (2), Walled Lake Central (2), Kalamazoo Loy Norrix (1), Midland High (1) and Salem (1).

Troy's Steve Forman repeats as No. 1 singles state champion

Troy’s Steve Forman defended his No. 1 singles state championship, beating Andrew Zhang of Bloomfield Hills for the second consecutive season.

Forman, the No. 1 seed, knocked off Zhang, the No. 2 seed, 6-1, 6-1.

Constantin Hemmrich repeats at No. 3 singles

Troy got another win at No. 2 singles when Brennan Cimpeanu battled past Ann Arbor Huron’s Kobie Mueller, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3). Constantin Hemmrich defended his No. 3 singles state title, giving Bloomfield Hills a 6-0, 6-0 win over Clarkston’s Jacob Burkett.

Stanley Rhodes of Ann Arbor Pioneer knocked off top seed Samir Rajani of Northville, 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Burmans give Bloomfield Hills title at No. 1 doubles

The Bloomfield Hills No. 1 doubles combination of Cade Burman and Sebastian Burman earned a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win over Birmingham Brother Rice’s Sam Schwartz and Jack Brockhaus. Bloomfield Hills got another title at No. 2 doubles when Vik Chakrabortty and Chaz Blamo beat Brother Rice’s team of Niko Mamatas and Riley McNulty, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

No. 5 seed James Mackenzie and Doug Prew of Brother Rice reached the state final at No. 3 doubles before falling to Ann Arbor Pioneer’s Connor Streeter and Brendan Karsch, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 4 doubles, No. 4 seed Marvin Jiang and Charlie Peng of Troy knocked off No. 3 seed T.J. Bai and Nick Grosh of Ann Arbor Huron, 6-2, 6-1.

Okemos claims first Division 2 title since 2007

Okemos claimed its first Division 2 boys tennis state title since a four-year run of titles from 2004 to 2007, easily outdistancing its opponents in Saturday’s championship matches at Kalamazoo College.

Okemos finished with 37 points with singles titles at No. 3 singles (Shrey Patel), No. 4 singles (Daniel Gorelik) and all four doubles flights: No. 1 doubles (Dinakar Talluri-Zal Chinay), No. 2 doubles (Rohan Shah-Siddhart Nagisetty), No. 3 doubles (Deniz Kalfa-Druv Talluri) and No. 4 doubles (Karthik Kolisetty-Aditya Kandula).

Birmingham Groves and Midland Dow tied for second with 21 points, followed by Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (20) and Birmingham Seaholm (18).

Forest Hill Central's Connor Genschaw earns No. 1 singles title

It took three sets, but No. 2 seed Connor Genschaw outlasted top seed, Gabe Liss, of Birmingham Groves. Genschaw opened with a 6-0 win, but Liss came back with a 6-4 win in the second set.

Genschaw, from Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, earned the state title with a 6-1 decision in the final set.

Shrey Patel, Daniel Gorelik give Okemos singles state titles

Gabe Vidinas gave Birmingham Groves its only state title, knocking off No. 1 seed Josh Portnoy of Okemos. Vidinas earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

Okemos claimed the rest of the state championships, beginning with top seed Shrey Patel’s 6-2, 6-4 win in No. 3 singles over No. 2 seed Jonah Liss of Birmingham Groves.

Daniel Gorelik, who was a runner-up at No. 3 singles in 2016, claimed the 2017 No. 4 singles title over No. 2 seed Vishnu Ghantasala or Portage Central, 6-0, 6-1.

Okemos sweeps doubles championships

In No. 1 doubles, the No. 2 seed Okemos team of Dinakar Talluri and Zal Chiney beat Midland Dow’s top-seeded team of Aditya Middha and Saketh Kamaraju, 6-3, 7-5. Middha won a state title at No. 1 doubles in 2016,

Rohan Shah and Siddharth Nagisetty gave Okemos a title at No. 2 doubles with a3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over the third seed, Jack Ziegler and Peyton Herbert of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central. Ziegler won the No. 2 doubles title in 2016.

Deniz Kalfa, the No. 4 singles champ in 2016, teamed with Druv Talluri of Okemos to win the No. 3 doubles state title with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 win over Aidan O’Neill and Max Levitsky of Birmingham Seaholm.

Karthik Kolisetty and Akitya Kandula gave Okemos a clean sweep of the doubles with a 6-3 7-6, 6-4 win in No. 4 doubles over Alex Acho and Ben Adams of Seaholm.

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood claimed its third straight Division 3 state championship, beating out Detroit Country Day for the third straight season.

Kingswood finished with 36 points in the Division 3 meet at Holland, with Detroit Country Day second at 28. Kingswood earned state titles at No. 1 singles (Benji Jacobson), No. 2 singles (Lucas Bosch), No. 3 singles (Justin Luo) and No. 2 doubles (Joseph Croskey-Nikhil Deenadayalu).

Lucas Bosch, Justin Luo and Eric Wang completed the No. 1 seed roll in No. 1 singles at the Division 3 state finals.

Bosch, from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, beat No. 2 seed Ricky Warnicke from Detroit Country Day, 6-4, 6-0, while his teammate, Justin Luo, shut out Allegan's Kody Harrington, 6-0, 6-0, to win at No. 3 singles.

Nick Hakken, Anish Premkumar give Forest Hills Eastern win at No. 1 doubles

Nick Hakken and Anish Premkumar of Ada Forest Hills Eastern gutted out a state-championship win at No. 1 doubles with a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Andrew Du and Jacob Yellens of Cranbrook-Kingswood. Hakken and Premkumar were the No. 3 seed, while Du and Yellens were the top seeds.

Joseph Croskey and Nikhil Deenadayalu of Cranbrook-Kingswwood earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Connor Smith and Kole Butterer, 6-2, 6-4.

Detroit Country Day won at No. 3 and No. 4 doubles, with Tom Nardiochio and Eric Liu beating Eshaan Kawira and Jack Trees of Cranbrook-Kingswood, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles. Nick Sicilia and Justin Lee addeda  7-6(2), 6-4 win at No. 4 doubles over Hayes Bradley and David Hermelin of Cranbrook-Kingswood.

Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett edges Ann Arbor Greenhills for second straight season

In 2016, Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett ended a string of eight straight Division 4 state titles by Ann Arbor Greenhills. Liggett seems intent on creating its own streak, edging Greenhills, 34-32, for the 2017 title.

It was the second-straight second-place finish for Greenhills. Liggett claimed titles at No. 1 singles (William Cooksey), No. 4 singles (Andrew Staricco) and No. 2 doubles (Thomas VanPelt-Spencer Warezak).

Traverse City St. Francis rides two state titles to third-place finish

Traverse City St. Francis finished third with 28 points, followed by Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (19) and Lansing Catholic (13). Almont, Grand Rapids South Christian and Ludington tied with 11 points each.

Other finishers were Grand Rapids Catholic Central (7), Grand Rapids West Catholic (6), Frankel Jewish Academy (6), Portland (5), Berrien Springs (4), Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian (4), Chesaning (3), Yale (3), Caro (2), Lansing Christian (2), Coloma (1), Fremont (1) and Paw Paw (1).

Cranbrook-Kingswood's William Cooksey claims No. 1 singles title

William Cooksey gave Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett a state championship at No. 1 singles, outlasting No. 1 seed Evan Sood of Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. After Cooksey, the No. 2 seed, earned a 6-4 win in the first set, Sood came back for a 6-2 win in the second to send the match in third set.

Cooksey regained control in the third set, winning 6-1 for the title.

Kaan Oral gives Greenhills title at No. 2 singles

Kaan Oral of Ann Arbor Greenhills rode the top seed to a title at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ian Sood of Gabriel Richard. It’s the second straight season that Sood finished second in No. 2 singles.

Nathan Sodini of Traverse City St. Francis breezed to the No. 3 singles title with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Casey Scoggin of Liggett, while Liggett’s Andrwe Staricco defended his No. 4 singles state title from 2016 with a 6-4, 6-2 championship win over Nathan Rosenberg of Greenhills.

Greenhills' Jack Harris, Trey Feldeisen claim No. 1 doubles title

Jack Harris of Greenhills teamed with Trey Feldeisen to defend his No. 1 doubles title in 2016 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alec Azar and Maddie Fozo of Liggett. Feldeisen was a runner-up in No. 3 doubles last season, while Azar won at No. 2 doubles in 2016. Fozo finished second at No. 1 doubles in 2016.

Thomas Van Pelt and Spencer Warezek were doubles runners-up in 2016, Van Pelt at No. 1 and Warezak at No. 3, but the two earned a No. 2 doubles title over third seed Sushruta Shanka and Joey Formicola of Ann Arbor Greenhills, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Drake Rosenberg, who won the No. 4 doubles title in 2016, moved up to No. 3 doubles and earned a state title with Taha Zirapury for Greenhills with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Matthrew Lesha and Craig Buhler of Liggett.

Alex Thelen and Tyler Tafelsky of Traverse City St. Francis claimed the No. 4 doubles state championship with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Liggett’s team of Victory Logan and Patrick Ilitch.
