High School Standout Performers: April 15-21

Each week, area high school coaches are asked to submit a list of standout performers from their team from the previous week’s games. A handful will appear on B1 in Monday’s print edition. If your child’s name – or anyone from your child’s team – doesn’t appear on the list, please encourage your coach to email their submissions to Tim.Hower@StarNewsOnline.com before 7 p.m. each Saturday.

Here are the nominees for Athletes of the Week. Check Thursday’s print edition to see who the StarNews staff selected.

Madi Berry, Ashley softball: She finished 9-for-15 with five runs scored and seven RBIs in four games, highlighted by a grand slam on Saturday against Wallace-Rose Hill.

Logan Adams, Hoggard baseball: In six innings pitched, he had 14 strikeouts. At the plate he went 3-for-6 with a double.

Briana Vreuls, Topsail girls soccer: Started season as JV keeper but took varsity spot when starter was injured. Posted 27 saves last week.

Henry Murtagh, Cape Fear Academy boys lacrosse: Posted 12 goals and five assists in three games against Cary Christian, Ravenscroft School and Ashley.

GIRLS SOCCER

Amanda Allen, Topsail: Versatile player has spent time at every position this season.

Kimberly Eike, Topsail: Continues to put together strong efforts by playing multiple 80-minute games.

Briana Vreuls, Topsail: Started season as JV keeper but took varsity spot when starter was injured. Posted 27 saves last week.

Parker Ormsby, Laney: Scored three goals and had one assist in the Buccaneers' three victories.

Cass Hames, Laney: Tallied four assists and ranks second in 4A for assists.

Haley Shand, Laney: Posted the game winning goal against New Hanover. She's second in the state for 4A in points.

Aubrey Gray, Laney: In 200 minutes of game action, allowed only one goal and made nine saves.

Mary Grace Kiernan, New Hanover: Scored four goals in win against Topsail and an assist in loss to Laney.

Joanie Richardson, New Hanover: Scored team's lone goal against Laney.

Sallie Newton, Coastal Christian: Finished with a combined 25 saves against Parrott Academy and Fayetteville Academy.

BASEBALL

Logan Adams, Hoggard: In six innings pitched, he had 14 strikeouts. At the plate he went 3-for-6 with a double.

Brooks Baldwin, Whiteville: He finished 9-for-13 with five runs scored, 10 RBIs, three doubles and a triple. On the mound he tossed seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk in a win against Fairmont.

Wyatt Beatini, South Brunswick: Hit .556 in three games.

Chase Hall, Laney: Threw a no-hitter on Tuesday at West Brunswick. Allowed one walk and struck out eight in a 10-0 conference win.

Zack Zabriskie, Hoggard: Went 7-for-8 with three doubles, four RBIs and three stolen bases.

SOFTBALL

Alleigh Himes, North Brunswick: Went 3-for-6 with one double and an RBI.

Makayla Himes, North Brunswick: Went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

Tristen Horrell, Laney: Finished 7-for-9 with a double, triple and three RBIs in three games.

Raven Lewis, Laney: A 5-for-12 effort with two doubles and three RBIs.

Sarah Manis, Laney: Finished 5-for-11 with four runs scored.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Molysha Brown, West Brunswick: Had 35 saves against Hoggard.

Alyssa Cooke, Hoggard: All-around solid play and set her teammates up for success.

Gwenna Gentle, West Brunswick: Scored four goals, posted an assist and played stellar defense against Hoggard.

Lilli Johnson, Hoggard: Picked up several ground balls for possession.

Katie Witmer, Hoggard: Was strong with goals, draw controls and takeaways.

BOYS LACROSSE

Wallace Fee, Cape Fear Academy: Finished the week with 10 goals.

Kyle Hatcher, New Hanover: Scored 10 goals and made six assists this week against Topsail and Laney.

Donovan Jones, Hoggard: Had seven goals and two assists in team's lone game of the week. 

Ande Kotz, Hoggard: Had three goals and three assists for Hoggard, who clinched the Mideastern Conference title.

Preston Meehl, Cape Fear Academy: One goal and 16 assists in his team's three games.

Henry Murtagh, Cape Fear Academy: Posted 12 goals and five assists in three games against Cary Christian, Ravenscroft School and Ashley.

GIRLS GOLF

Sarah Funderburg, Wilmington Christian Academy: She was the medalist this past Tuesday at Wedgewood Golf Course in Wilson with a score of 40.

BOYS TENNIS

Holland Baynard, New Hanover: In three singles matches this week, Holland went 3-0 without losing a game and lost a total of three games in three doubles matches, all against Mideastern Conference opponents.
