Simon Tomlinson proved last Saturday that he is still the top male table tennis player in Jamaica. Competing in a Commonwealth Games team trial event on September 16, Tomlinson was undefeated in nine trips to the table. Onika Francis and Solesha Young went 1-2 in the female section.

In an event staged at the Excelsior High School, Tomlinson, the national men's singles champion, reigned supreme. His fast topspin game beat six of his nine opponents three sets to none.

Former national champion Chris Marsh lost only to Tomlinson and promising University of the West Indies student Kyle Davidson to compile a 7-2 record.

Wily veteran Alphanso Morris and Rajni Brown finished with six wins and three losses each. Morris, who was awarded third place, defeated Brown when they met.

Unfortunately, ex-national champion Kane Watson was on the sidelines. Watson is recovering from a hamstring injury incurred at the recent Caribbean Regional Championships in Cuba.

Watson wasn't the only noted player to miss the trials as national women's champion Shenique Clare now lives overseas. In her absence, Francis and Young, runner-up in the under-13 category at the recent Caribbean Region Mini-Cadet and Pre-Cadet Championships, played to 5 wins and 1 loss each. When they met at the Trials, Francis won 3 sets to 1.

Brittany Murray and Larrisa McLaughlin finished third and fourth overall.

The Commonwealth Games will be staged in April next year in Australia.
