Damir Dzumhur became Bosnia's first player to reach an ATP Tour final at the Winston-Salem Open on Friday and was glad to reward compatriots at home who stayed up late to watch him overhaul Kyle Edmund.

Damir DzumhurThe 25-year-old Dzumhur recovered from a poor start to beat the Briton 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 and will bid to become the Balkan nation's first Tour winner in Saturday's title-decider against Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

"I think everybody in Bosnia is still awake and watching me, which makes me really proud for my country," Dzumhur said in comments published on the ATP website.

"For such a small country as Bosnia, it's a really big result.

"It's going to be a big thing for me, for my country, as the only player in the Top 100 making great results.

"So I'm proud of my country and proud of myself and it's going to be a good day tomorrow."

Dzumhur, who is ranked 67th, is not the first Bosnian-born player to make an ATP Tour final, with others to have done so under the flag of another country.

The 2014 US Open winner Marin Cilic played for Bosnia as a junior but has represented Croatia as a professional.

Ivan Dodig, a 2015 French Open doubles winner, played for Bosnia until 2008 before also shifting allegiance to Croatia. He won his only ATP Tour singles title in 2011.

Against Edmund, Dzumhur had to fight off the lethargy of playing 11 matches in 12 days, having reached the final of a Challenger Tour event in the Dominican Republic last week.

He did not arrive in North Carolina until the early hours of Monday and was back on court later in the day.

He looked headed for an earlier departure for the US Open that starts Monday, after being routed in the first set.

But he rallied when the adrenalin kicked in.

Bautista Agut easily accounted for Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 6-2, 6-4 in the other semi-final and has a chance to make amends for last year's loss in the title-decider to fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

Cibulkova and Gavrilova to meet in Connecticut final

Second seed Dominika Cibulkova and Moscow-born Australian Daria Gavrilova will meet in the final of the Connecticut Open after respective straight sets semi-final victories on Friday.

Slovakian Cibulkova thrashed Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-1 6-3, before Gavrilova upset top seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 6-4 in an entertaining nightcap on the outdoor hardcourt in New Haven.

World number 11 Cibulkova has won eight career titles, including four in a stellar 2016, but is still seeking a breakthrough this year.

The 28-year-old was far too good for Mertens.

"After not an easy year for me, I'm finding my form. I'm really happy to start it here," Cibulkova said after advancing to her first final of 2017.

Gavrilova had a tougher match against former world number two Radwanska.

Wearing her heart on her sleeve, an emotional Gavrilova used a powerful forehand to good effect, hitting a series of winners against her more stoic Polish opponent.

After nervously netting a forehand groundstroke to squander her first match point, Gavrilova made no mistake on her next chance to advance to her third career final.

"I trusted my game plan and I think I executed it very well," Gavrilova said.

"I was pretty aggressive and taking chances whenever I could on her second serve."
