Sparc Systems Limited, a local information and communications technology company, have pumped in K1.5 million towards the staging of a two-day national junior tennis tournament.

The tournament, to be held from August 26-27 at Country Club Limbe’s National Tennis Centre in Blantyre, is expected to attract 40 participants.

Sparc Systems managing director Wisely Phiri said they decided to sponsor the event after being impressed by the sponsorship proposal presented by the Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam).

“As a Malawian company, we believe in sponsoring sports as one way of developing young talent that could put the country on the map.

“They [Ltam] have a clear strategic plan on what they want to achieve by 2019 and we thought it wise to come in and assist,” he said.

Ltam general secretary Stan Kaunda said the tournament will go a long way in motivating the players and enhancing competition.

“We are highly appreciative because Sparc Systems are coming in at a time when companies are pulling out from sponsoring sports due to the difficult economic climate and being a Malawian company, it could not have been any better,” he said.

Ltam technical director Thompson Mtengula said the tournament will help them rank junior players and motivate them. n
