Grey Cup celebrates Canada Day in England

The Grey Cup’s Magical Mystery Tour continued in England on Saturday with a visit to Canada 150 celebrations at Trafalgar Square and a Wimbledon tennis party.

Retired quarterback Henry Burris, who won the Cup last November with the Ottawa Redblacks, took the CFL’s most prized trophy to a party for an estimated 80,000 people in London.

Burris took part in a celebrity ball-hockey game in Trafalgar Square and took the stage to speak with BBC personality Dan Snow as part of an event organized by the Canadian High Commission.

The CFL presence at the Canada Day party included an obstacle course and an opportunity for fans to pose for pictures with Burris and the Cup.

“(The Cup) has truly changed our lives,” Burris said earlier this week. “For us to have won it in the fashion that we did and for me to walk away from the game at that time after winning, has meant so much in our lives, and now here’s another opportunity of being able to carry it on the 150th.

“It’s a memory I’ll never forget.”

Later in the day, CFL officials took the Grey Cup to Chelsea to a party for Canadian tennis players who will compete at Wimbledon, starting Monday.

Among the Canadian tennis players in attendance were Daniel Nestor, Adil Shamasdin, Gabriela Dabrowski and Bianca Andreescu.

Burris and the Cup then moved on to the Carlsberg Sports Bar at Empire Casino, where the CFL hosted a watch party for the Canada Day game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders at new Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
