The 15th-seeded Texas A&M men’s tennis team will play second-seeded Texas in NCAA tournament super regional play at 6 p.m. Friday at the Texas Tennis Center.
The teams last played a year ago when Texas grabbed a 5-2 victory at home on Feb. 26. The Longhorns, who will be joining the Southeastern Conference next year, are 24-3, including a 7-0 record in the Big 12. A&M is 20-10 and was 7-5 in the SEC, tying Auburn for fourth.
“First of all, we are excited and privileged to keep dancing,” A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “Many schools would love to be in our shoes, with a fighting chance to keep going. Texas is a very good team and when these two old rivals get together, it is always special. I know our team is looking forward to the challenge.”
UT is riding a 15-match winning streak. All of its losses were by 4-3 scores. The Longhorns lead the series 96-17-3. The Longhorns are led by Eliot Spizzirri, who is ranked second in the nation in singles. Micah Braswell is fifth. Gilles-Arnaud Bailly is 40th, Jonah Braswell 56th and Pierre-Yves Bailly 90th. In doubles, Cleeve Harper and Spizzirri are 24th.
